Strider Balance Bike

We don’t usually add products like this to our site, but we came across this and were so impressed with the results we knew we just had to add it.  The Strider PREbike is the best no pedal balance bike on the market.  It is designed for 1-5 year olds.  With no adult help a curious toddler will intuitively straddle the bike and begin the process of learning to ride a bike.

First the child walks with the toddler bike  between their legs, then they start pushing off and rolling, trusting his/her own abilities they begin running, gliding and steering around obstacles.

Organic Bamboo Diaper in Karate Print

Poverty Jane is an Etsy Shop, created by an intriguing Adirondack mom named Kate who sells everything from cloth diapers to adorable baby shoes to mittens and much more in between. Inspired by simplicity and driven by passion, Kate devotes her full self to creating safe, durable, and practical products.

Kate was kind enough to donate a One Size Organic Bamboo diaper in Karate print along with a 3 layer and 5 layer bamboo insert.  After stripping the oils and prepping the diaper for its first time use I was very excited to see my son wearing it. The diaper is very adjustable making it a perfect fit. My initial try out was without an insert, I wanted to see how long it will take before it is noticeably wet on the outside. After several hours of wear the diaper still felt dry to the touch. Now this is insert free and woolie free! I was impressed. I would also like to mention that there were absolutely no red marks on his thighs or waist assuring me that the diaper is as comfortable as it looks.  For my next trial I decided to try the diaper with the 5 layer insert first thing in the morning; this is when the heaviest diapers of the day come in. A little over four hours later the diaper started to get damp. Typically, at this time of day, I can anticipate a semi dry cloth diaper for an hour at best. I was blown away by the super absorbency. This bamboo diaper really exceeded my expectations.

I mentioned that I received 2 inserts with this diaper; a 3 layer and 5 layer. I have tried out both and would highly recommend getting the 5 layer insert. It is very absorbent and does not make the diaper appear bulky. I can expect it to hold up very well throughout the night when worn with a diaper cover.

Kate , the creator of Poverty Jane was kind enough to share with me a little bit about herself and her shop:

How long has your shop been open?
Poverty Jane has been on Etsy for a little over a year. The online aspect of my business is relatively new, but my husband and I have been running a small business together for many years called AK-67 Design and Fabrications. Its a collaboration of our art work, sewing, photography, metal works and carpentry.

How did you get started?
I’ve always been a crafty person. I guess most of the credit comes from my grandmothers, both which survived the Great Depression. It had a HUGE impact on how they saw the world and that philosophy was passed down to me. I was always involved in sewing projects as a child and learned quite quickly how to sew my own clothes, bags, alterations and patchwork from what materials were accessible. Another spin off of recycling I suppose!

What are your inspirations?
My inspirations are many! I love handmade items. They just sing to my heart and fill me with love! I adore people who are corky and put character into their items, like my very good friend Melissa, from TinyHappy. I love nature and adore the idea of creating a natural environment for myself and my children. The earth is such a miraculous place full of life, and I just feel blown away with natures handmade items. It really inspires me to make things that emulate the “back to basics” feel for our children, and another reason for my obsession with wool!

What is the most popular item you sell?
There a quite a few things people love in the shop. Recently there’s been a lot of interest in the over night/daytime training pants I make. They are lined with all natural textiles and have a layer of wool sandwiched between the inner layers. People are loving them and I get great feed backs from that item. There’s been interest in the wool crib pad and crib cover for baby’s mattress. That’s been a hit and of course my diapers and wool diaper covers have been doing great and I get positive feed back from those items as well.

What makes your shop unique?
Well, originally….the driven purpose for Poverty Jane was to inform mothers of what was out there and give them other options. It devastates me to know that most of the baby products out there in the world, including most cloth diapers (microfibers and PUL), are full of chemicals that are KNOWN carcinogens by the United States Department of Labor.

I can’t quite get my head around how it is that we scientifically know this as a fact yet, we see so many of these chemicals used in baby products. It sickens me to think of some mama out there, trying to do the right thing for her baby could possibly be putting her child at a health risk without even knowing it……its heart breaking for me.

What has the world has come to, that, we trust so much of what were being told without questioning it. I want to live the green life, but even the green industry can be misleading with propaganda. I have come to find that you must trust yourself and find those answers before you make any decisions of right/wrong, good/bad. That’s the passion that drives me to do what I’m doing. I want to inform women of their choices and to get us all on the “back to basics” way of thinking.

I also feel that having a Biology/Nutrition degree in college helps with creating a unique shop feature. I absolutely, unequivocally, find the Scientific facts before I make any decisions on what is eco-friendly and safe for our children. I have all certifications and ISO numbers to back all of my products up with factual information and that feels good to have that peace of mind. I have spent MANY hours researching the care of diapers and how to achieve that maintenance with eco-friendly products. I offer all families that purchase Poverty Jane diapers that unique formula to maintain and clean diapers and also offer help with any problems that may arise down the road by specifically formulated a cleaning routine that compliments your baby.

What do you love about what you do?
I love meeting and connecting with other mothers. We have very long winters up here in the Adirondack Mountains, and living on the land doesn’t really offer much in the way of human connections outside of my family. So being here, communicating with other women, is such a joy!

I also love the feeling of sharing my thoughts and ideas with other families and being there for them, to help with any questions or concerns they may have. We all want to be more green and eco-friendly. And some of us just don’t know where to begin, it can feel quite over whelming. But we can all start somewhere, if it be turning off the TV, recycling, only purchasing recyclable materials, growing a garden..Im here to help inspire those achievements!
